Pixel is a modular toolset designed by Guorong Luo for DIY enthusiasts. Its different function modules not only meet daily needs but also provide infinite possibilities for splicing, allowing users to enjoy the pleasure of creation. The designer aimed to create a new experience that allows people to enjoy the process of 'playing tools'.
Pixel stands out from other toolsets due to its unique approach. Instead of starting from the existing user experience, the designer focused on creating a new experience that allows people to enjoy the process of 'playing tools'. By doing so, Pixel transforms the perception of tools from mere objects used for work into interactive and engaging toys.
The modular design of Pixel allows users to easily connect different function modules to create various tools. The basic modules, such as the screwdriver tip, connection module, and handle, can be combined to make a simple screwdriver. As users progress, they can experiment with different mechanical modules to create their own unique tools for performing interesting tasks.
Pixel incorporates various mechanical structures to achieve its interesting and creative functions. Modules such as the 90-degree drive module, transmission module, and 1 to 2 module enable users to change the direction of force, modify the relationship between speed and torque, and screw two screws at once. Additionally, Easter eggs offer even more possibilities for play and exploration.
The production of Pixel involves the use of die casting or CNC for cube cases, injection molding for gears, and materials such as anodized aluminum for cube cases, PA6 Nylon for gears, and N52 Neodymium Magnets for stronger and easier connections.
The project started in March 2018 in Shanghai and was completed in June 2018. It was exhibited in the College of Design and Innovation graduation exhibition at Tongji University in Shanghai, China.
Guorong Luo conducted extensive research to inform the design of Pixel. Through trend and background research, as well as on-hand tests and interviews, he discovered that modern people are using tools less frequently. This insight inspired him to create a toolset that challenges the traditional perception of tools and encourages people to engage with them in a playful and creative manner.
Despite the challenges of challenging the concept of the tool itself and finding the right narrative to convey the design's intentions, Guorong Luo successfully created Pixel as a catalyst for society to reconsider the concept of tools. It is not just a tool, but an experience and a form of self-expression.
Pixel has been recognized for its innovative design and practicality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Hardware, Power, and Hand Tools Design category in 2019. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Pixel's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
